DROP COLLECTIVE – Come Shine – LP

DROP COLLECTIVE is a group of ten musicians who fuse Jamaican music and jazz in a repertoire of their own compositions and arrangements, whilst never losing sight of the importance of getting the audience dancing. Caribbean rhythms and melodies under the umbrella of jazz, yet with a reverence for the essence of both traditions. COME SHINE is the second album by this young band, formed in Barcelona in 2016.

The immediate first impression is that of a compact, solid and synchronised sound, yet one brimming with nuance. This quickly triggers the mental shortcuts that select the information needed to realise that this is an outstanding album. This sensation remains with the listener throughout the album’s ten tracks, eight of which are sung in English and two are instrumentals. The musicians’ jazz background, in addition to their technical skill and expertise, gives them a great ease in delving into modes and tonalities which, in some cases, may go unnoticed on a first listen due to their subtlety, but which form the very foundations upon which DROP COLLECTIVE’s sound is built.
