AKATZ are neither Jamaican nor British – nor do they need to be. Over a career spanning almost 30 years, they have developed a style all of their own that makes them instantly recognisable, authentic and unique. Seasoned by countless battles, they have always devoted as much attention to creating quality music as to turning every gig into an unforgettable party.
YUYU was recorded in November 2019 at Kaki Arkarazo’s studios (Kortatu, Negu Gorriak) and, whilst awaiting release, the curse of the pandemic struck. Needless to say, the band’s self-imposed first mission has been to send these 12 spells out to the four winds. There are twelve tracks of classic ska, reggae and Jamaican jazz, seasoned with R&B and hints of danceable swing and a punk attitude.
Timeless melodies, full of rhythm, swing, beat and flow, and a compositional solidity that means each track could be interpreted in countless ways by musicians from different backgrounds and with varied training who are keen to take on the challenge.
AKATZ have been at the crossroads between Kingston and Bilbao, conversing with the mischievous spirit of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras, which has pointed them in new directions to continue their creative journey. The uninitiated will receive this album like headless chickens, as a fierce revelation, whilst lifelong fans will celebrate the occasion with offerings of smoke, spirits and endless dancing.
